At one point during the event, Sanders addressed the president directly noting that he has released 10 years of tax returns and urged the billionaire to do the same.

Since launching his first presidential campaign in 2015, the Vermont independent has gained newfound financial success. Sanders recently revealed that his income from book sales in the aftermath of that race had made him a millionaire.

Much of Sanders' income came from books he has written about his democratic socialist platform, which includes a call for higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

"Bernie Sanders has been filing detailed financial disclosures for nearly 30 years, and he is proud to voluntarily make these tax returns available many months before the election, " said campaign manager Faiz Shakir. "While millions of people are paying more in taxes than they anticipated, Amazon, Netflix and dozens of major corporations as a result of Trump's tax bill pay nothing in corporate taxes, and I think that's a disgrace", he added. In 2014, prior to his first presidential run, he reported an income with his wife of about US$206,000, according to his tax returns.

He said that his view has always been that the wealthiest Americans ought to pay more taxes.

It's tradition for presidential candidates, and most candidates for federal office, to release their tax returns.
