Eleven Palestinians Injured During Anti-Israel Protests in Gaza

31 March 2019

Four Palestinians were killed on Saturday, Gaza medical officials said.

Gaza's Health Ministry said that a 17-year-old protester died immediately after being shot in the face in east Gaza City.

A Palestinian demonstrator runs from tear gas fired by Israeli troops during a protest marking the Land Day in al-Mughayer village, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank March 29, 2019.

According to a Gaza rights group, 196 Palestinians have been killed in the demonstrations over the past year, including 41 minors, and thousands were wounded by live fire. He said he planned to show his children the Israeli soldiers and return to safety before the protest started. Al-Shawa was due to get married in two weeks, but an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City building destroyed his sister's apartment, where he had rented a second floor bedroom and had amassed everything he and his bride needed for the wedding.

With Israeli tanks massed on the border ahead of the anniversary, Palestinian officials said Egyptian mediators were to meet with protest organizers to urge that Saturday's rally be peaceful. An Israeli soldier was also killed in the context of the marches. My father is unemployed so I will be unable to go to university.

On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly instructed the army to prepare for the possibility of a "broad" campaign in Gaza.

The veteran Israeli leader faces a serious challenge from a centrist party led by a former general and pressure from hawkish allies in his right-wing coalition to be tough on security.

The anniversary event could prove combustible, coming days before the Israeli elections and following a round of heavy cross-border fighting, ignited by a rocket launched from Gaza that slammed into a house in central Israel earlier this week.

SANA said other protests took place in the southern city of Daraa, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the Golan Heights. Lebanon's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian said the decision "is against all worldwide and United Nations laws".

Israel bolstered its forces around the enclave in advance.

The Higher National Committee for Return and Breaking the Siege in Gaza called for an unprecedented millionth participation on Saturday, coinciding with the first anniversary the Return Marches.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said the talks covered a ceasefire, increasing humanitarian aid and improving the economic situation in Gaza.

Israel seized Gaza in a 1967 war and pulled out its troops in 2005.

Israel and Hamas fought three wars from 2007-2014 and have come close to all-out conflict several times since.

Israel rejects the criticism, saying its troops are defending the border against rioters, and it has no choice but to use lethal force where necessary. United Nations investigators said last week that Israeli forces may be guilty of war crimes for using excessive force.

Israel's army said most demonstrators were remaining away from the fence. Palestinians have also launched incendiary balloons and kites into Israel.

Since March 30, 2018, at least 258 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire, the vast majority along the border.
