Smollett told police he was attacked around 2 a.m. on his way home from a sandwich shop.
It wasn't clear from Trump's tweet on Thursday whether he thinks the charges against Smollett should not have been dropped, or whether he thinks Smollett shouldn't have been charged in the first place.
The two brothers who claim they worked with the actor to stage the January attack are lying, according to Smollett attorney Tina Glandian.
President Donald Trump says the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice will review the case of "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett in Chicago. In the weeks following his suspicious account, police obtained evidence that suggested the ambush was premeditated and that Smollett had paid his attackers to do it to gain publicity and advance his career.
In yet another twist to the case, all the charges against him were dropped on 26 March.
"Well, you know, I mean, I think there's - obviously, you can disguise that", Glandian said.

Rosales is also slated to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and members of the Venezuelan diaspora at a prominent Washington think tank.
On Wednesday, Smollett's attorney, Patricia Brown Holmes, released a statement to ET, accusing Chicago officials of creating a "smear campaign" against the 36-year-old actor.
Foxx did recuse herself from the case.
The hotel rooms were part of an effort to avoid the media last month as detectives investigated Smollett's report that he was assaulted in January by a pair of men in downtown Chicago, the reports said.
But Emanuel agrees that Smollett - who continues to maintain that the attack actually happened - got off too lightly with a deal that did not involve a guilty plea. Trump made the announcement on Twitter, calling the case "outrageous" and "an embarrassment". She pointed to Smollett forfeiting his $10,000 bond and doing community service in return for dropping the charges. They said they need to focus on more violent, urgent crimes in the city. "So, it's not - it's not implausible", she told Guthrie.
Kamran pointed out that while Chicago state prosecutors are not pursuing the case further, there is still an FBI investigation pending regarding the threatening letter Smollett allegedly received on the set of Empire.
"There are lots of things we apparently should not pre-judge before we have all the facts, like Jussie Smollett (all charges dropped?!) and the Mueller report (not yet public!)", Star Trek icon George Takei tweeted. "This is a whitewash of justice".
A lawyer for the city of Chicago said Thursday the city is seeking $130,00 from actor Jussie Smollett as restitution for the cost of the investigation he initiated.
