He said he will now consult with Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein - who managed the inquiry prior to Mr Barr's appointment - and Mr Mueller "to determine what other information from the report can be released to Congress and the public".
It will now be up to Bill Barr, the U.S. attorney general, to decide how much of the report to release to Congress and the public.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has handed in a keenly awaited report on his investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election and any potential wrongdoing by US President Donald Trump, the Justice Department said on Friday.
Mr Barr, a Trump appointee confirmed by the Senate in February, told lawmakers he may be able to provide information to Congress on the report's findings as soon as this weekend.
Former FBI Director James Comey has penned an op-ed in the New York Times. President Trump has insisted that there was "no collusion" between his campaign and Russian interests, a refrain that he repeated often as he relentlessly attacked Mueller's work as politically motivated and an overreach. On Feb. 22, six Democratic committee chairs with the broadest oversight powers wrote a letter to Barr requesting they receive the report "without delay and to the maximum extent permitted by law".
The House just voted to demand DOJ publicly release Mueller report
As it stands, Mueller is to present the report to Barr , who in turn will review the materials. Rumors have been flying for weeks about the end of Mueller's Specal Counsel investigation.
But Trump has also signaled he isn't opposed to Mueller's report being released publicly.
Only two special counsels have been appointed under the 1999 regulations: Mueller and former Senator John Danforth, who was appointed that same year to investigate the deadly 1993 federal raid on the Branch Davidian cult compound in Waco, Texas.
UPDATE, 5:11 p.m. CDT: Mueller is not recommending any further indictments in connection with the now-completed Russian Federation investigation. Although he has indicted a number of Trump affiliates, Mueller has so far been silent on whether he has evidence against the president himself engaging in collusion with the Russians or criminal activity. "The White House has not received or been briefed on the Special Counsel's report". Federal prosecutors, also in NY, have been investigating foreign contributions made to the president's inaugural committee.
The prospect of no further indictments could present a massive boon to President Trump and many of those surrounding him. So when are we going to learn what Mueller found out? Mr Comey, who was sacked by Mr Trump in May 2017, states he is "morally unfit to be president of the United States" in a scathing assessment of his term in office. "I call it the witch hunt, it's all a big hoax so we'll see what happens".
Trump and his allies have spent almost two years trying to discredit Mueller.
