Weather warning for the Yorkshire coast - here's why and when

13 March 2019

The Met Office said a deep area of low-pressure will cross to the north of the United Kingdom late on Tuesday into Wednesday, and has issued yellow weather warnings in some parts of the country.

The Met Office's Irish counterpart, Met Éireann, has officially named the powerful weather system due to arrive in Northern Ireland tomorrow as Storm Gareth.

As a result a fresh weather warning has been issued between 9pm tomorrow night until 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Gusts of 65mph are likely along coastal areas, while wind speeds are predicted to reach 55mph inland.

The Met Office has issued a list of scenarios that the public should be aware of before Storm Gareth strikes the North of Ireland in the coming days.

Storm Gareth is due to move into the United Kingdom overnight into Wednesday with gusts of more than 80mph expected in some regions. There will be rough seas and large waves making western Britain and Irish coastal areas unsafe.

"Falling onto already wet ground, 20-40mm of rainfall is expected quite widely with 50-60mm possible over higher ground in Cumbria".

The wind warning is valid from Tuesday, March 12 at noon to Wednesday, March 13 at noon.

The area of deep low pressure is expected to bring gusts of up to 80mph in some areas, and will lead to "unsettled" weather for the remainder of the week.

Powerful winds reaching over 90mph in parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland could pose a "danger to life" by whipping up debris and tidal waves, the Met Office said. Winds will gradually ease during the afternoon.
