Trump boasted Friday during a White House Rose Garden press event that Abe had handed him "the most handsome copy" of a five-page letter about the nomination but concluded 'I'll probably never get it'.
Intriguingly, Asahi's report says Abe was prompted to nominate Trump after receiving an "informal" request from the USA government.
On Sunday, the daily Asahi Shimbun reported that Abe had nominated Trump for the prize after the US government sounded the Japanese leader out over a possible nomination, citing an unnamed government source.
"President Trump has acted decisively toward resolving the issues of the North Korean nuclear and missile problems", he said.
Under the foundation's rules, names and other information about unsuccessful nominations can not be disclosed for 50 years. He said, "I thus decline comment".
A second summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is scheduled to be held on February 27 and 28 in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
Grammys Producer Ken Ehrlich Deeply Hurt By Ariana Grande's Pointed Attack
Grande said she was upset that the Recording Academy invited Miller's parents to the awards show to watch their son lose. This is the singer's first ever Grammy Award win.
"Being Trump's closest friend among world leaders has not worked out too well for Abe", said Jeff Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University Japan.
Trump said he thanked Abe at the time, but added that he did not expect to win the prize, and that that was "OK".
Abe, in the paper's words, was "acceding to a request from Washington" with the nomination.
"The president has repeatedly emphasized that President Trump's leadership and decisiveness have played a crucial role in establishing peace on the Korean peninsula, so it is President Moon's belief that he well deserves the Nobel Peace Prize", Kim Eui-keum, said at a briefing Monday. The Nobel committee's website says there are 304 candidates for the 2019 prize, 219 individuals and 85 organizations. The president was responding to a question on progress made since last year's historic summit with North Korea.
The deadline for nominations for the 2019 prize, which will be announced on October 11., was January 31.
Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 and 2018, but both documents were determined to have been "forged". He was the first foreign leader to meet Mr. Trump after he won the 2016 presidential election. The president's comments Friday drew speculation that South Korean President Moon Jae-in might have been the one who nominated the president, but his spokesman said he had not. No missiles, no rockets, no nuclear testing'.
Last year's prize was jointly awarded to Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege and Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad.
