Elizabeth Warren officially launches her 2020 presidential bid

10 February 2019

Elizabeth Warren has made her presidential candidacy official, kicking off her bid for the White House at a rally in the working-class town of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

She was to be introduced by Rep. Joe Kennedy III, D-Mass., who meant to endorse her candidacy, according to an official familiar with his plans.

Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement Saturday that Warren has been "exposed as a fraud by the Native Americans she impersonated and disrespected to advance her professional career, and the people of MA she deceived to get elected".

Following the formation of a presidential exploratory committee on December 31, Warren had a successful first month on the campaign trail, making well-received trips to Iowa and New Hampshire with her message of taking on a corrupt political and economic system.

She said Trump is not the cause of what is broken in America, just the latest symptom.

Sounding very much like a single mother, Warren highlighted this as a major achievement - as her supporters smiled and laughed - and insisted that if she could do something like this, then anything is possible.

Warren said, "We are here to take on a fight that will shape our lives, our children's lives, and our grandchildren's lives, just as surely as the fight that began in these streets more than a century ago". Still, about as many Democrats said they'd be at least somewhat likely to support Warren as said the same of Harris or Sanders.

Warren is undoubtedly a well qualified and strong addition to the 2020 democratic primary, which a lot of public and political support behind her.

During her remarks, Warren repeatedly lambasted the fundamental injustice of a political system that rewards those with the deepest pockets at the expense of the most vulnerable.

A Monmouth University poll showed Warren get a boost in national support after she announced her exploratory campaign at the end of previous year.

The story got fresh legs this week when the Washington Post reported on a 1986 University of Texas state bar registration card on which she wrote her race was "American Indian", leading to another apology from Warren. "I want to know what people are going to do to fix the issues that matters that we face".

I will always vote to reelect Warren to the Senate, but she should not be the Democratic nominee.

Warren will not go into her presidential announcement with the wind at her back, however.

Her platform includes a tax on the richest 75,000 Americans.

Since launching her exploratory committee, Warren has traveled to Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Puerto Rico to meet with voters and test out her 2020 message.

Some Democrats encouraged Warren to challenge Hillary Clinton for the party's presidential nomination in 2016, but she demurred.

Three of her fellow senators also are running - Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey - with others actively considering it. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar is set to announce her plans on Sunday.
