Colman, from Norwich, stars as Queen Anne in The Favourite, while Bale was recognised for his portrayal of controversial former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney in Vice.

Notable absences from the shortlist include British stars Claire Foy for First Man and Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns, as well as Cooper in the directing category. Its snubs in the supporting actor, best director and best original screenplay categories is a huge miscalculation on the academy's part. Of those, the likes of Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born and more have made the cut.

The star's directorial debut A Star Is Born collected eight nominations, including a nod for himself for best actor for his role as an alcoholic rock star opposite Lady Gaga's aspiring singer, but he failed to be recognised for helming the project. Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born and the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody are both up for Best Picture.

The Oscars will be broadcast live from Los Angeles's Dolby Theater on February 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. In 1998, his "4 Little Girls" was nominated for documentary feature.

You can always count on the Academy to do the right thing - eventually.

In the best actor category, Christian Bale looks to be the frontrunner for his uncanny portrayal of Cheney in "Vice". The film had also been nominated for Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes.

As we know, the ceremony is now down one show host, since Kevin Hart stepped away from the gig after some homophobic tweets of his resurfaced online, and time's a-ticking down to showtime.

Some Oscar regulars were honored again. In the 10 years since the Oscars expanded its best-picture ballot, the PGA victor has gone on to win best picture eight times. "It ticks off enough boxes to make people feel okay about themselves supporting it", she said, referring to the Marvel film´s mainly black cast, black director and boffo box-office numbers.

Black Panther continues to be an unprecedented success for Marvel. It seems like yesterday when the beginning of the new year was upon us, and the advent of having so many superhero movies hitting theaters seemed like a dream come true for every fanboy and fangirl.

Thankfully, the Academy backtracked, and wisely awarded Black Panther the nomination.

It might have been a long shot, but Bo Burnham's ode to life's most awkward year at least seemed to have a small chance of getting a nomination, for writing or Elsie Fisher's achingly poignant performance.
