"Nancy Pelosi and some of the Democrats turned down my offer yesterday before I even got up to speak".

"These are steel barriers in high priority locations", Trump said in his speech, adding that it was not a complete barrier on the border "from sea to sea". "Best economy! They should do the right thing for the Country & allow people to go back to work", he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi caught wind of Trump's proposal before it was made public Saturday afternoon.

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said Democrats have backed themselves into a corner in negotiations to end a record-long partial government shutdown, suggesting any compromise with President TrumpDonald John TrumpGraham: Trump should meet Pakistan's leader to reset relations Former House Republican: Trump will lose the presidency if he backs away from border security Pompeo: US "absolutely not" getting out of the Middle East MORE would anger the party's base.

Trump also proposed a three-year extension to the temporary protected status the USA offers to immigrants fleeing countries affected by natural disasters or violence.

Conservative critics of Trump's plan said the protections against deportation amounted to amnesty for lawbreakers.

Trump said that there would be "no big push" to remove the 11 million people in the country illegally, before warning: "'but be careful, Nancy!"

Pence said the president would listen to proposals to amend his deal. There's no pathway to citizenship.

They have decided that in order to ensure that they prevent such a barrier from being built that they would prefer to starve government workers merely to spite the American people.

Trump had repeatedly dismissed the idea of a deal involving Dreamers in recent weeks, saying he would prefer to see first whether DACA survives a court challenge. "The president is offering a solution, the Democrats just sound bites" in television interviews.

But Pence, in a briefing with reporters, said the president prefers to wait for the courts to decide that issue. President Trump on the partial government shutdown and efforts to reach a compromise on border wall funding.

The new deal still includes funding for a US-Mexico border wall but offers Democrats a few more incentives to come to the table - the biggest inducement being the extension of temporary protections for children of illegal migrants brought into the United States, known as "Dreamers".

In his speech Saturday from the White House, Trump was clear in reiterating the importance of the border wall, "As a candidate for president I promised I would fix this crisis and I intend to fix this crisis one way or the other".

"O$3 ffering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking", he said. Republicans have a 53-47 majority.

"As the president says, 'We'll see, '" Pence told Fox News.

They also chose to attempt to block the President's lawful right to update the American people on the progress of the nation and what his administration intends to accomplish in 2109.

The New York Democrat said Trump's plan offers "one-sided and ineffective remedies".

Democrats, however, continue to say that they will not negotiate with Trump until he ends the shutdown, the longest in American history.

Trump also lashed out at Pelosi personally - something he had refrained from early on - and accused her, without evidence, of having "behaved so irrationally" and moving "so far to the left that she has now officially become a Radical Democrat". The California city is Pelosi's home town.

The offer of a three-year reprieve for illegal immigrants who came to the USA as children, in exchange for $5.7 billion from Congress for his promised wall along the Mexican border, was also met with disdain by many Republicans.

"Whether it's personal or not, it's not personal for me", Trump said.
