Because Democrats' proposals do not include any additional funding to construct a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, it is unlikely that they will be backed by the president and a Republican-controlled Senate.
Hector Garza, vice president-at-large of the National Border Patrol Council and an agent at the Texas border, added that "murderers and rapists" are coming in this country "on a daily basis" and that a wall "will be able to stop that".
House Democrats plan to vote on a legislative package made up of six full-year spending bills to reopen the closed parts of the federal government as well as a stopgap funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security that would maintain existing funding levels through February 8, effectively delaying a fight over the border wall until that time. "So we would hope that they would reconsider and would support the very bills that pass the Senate", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY. "Her test of leadership will be: Can she control the radical progressives who support open borders and can she successfully negotiate opening the government and working with President Trump?"
Mr McConnell called the Democrats' move a "total nonstarter" and a "political sideshow". "And as the president has made it clear, he wants to make sure that there is border wall funding included".
Veteran Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, considered an ardent supporter of India-US ties, has been elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the second time, becoming the most powerful elected woman in the US.
Pelosi began her campaign to regain the speaker's job, which she held from 2007 until 2011, immediately after the election.
"The wall - you can call it a barrier, you can call it whatever you want - but essentially we need protection in our country", Trump told reporters, without taking questions. "It isn't cost effective".
The border guards took turns to hail Trump's commitment to the wall, which Democrats and much of the public denounce as a gimmick that does not consider the realities of immigration.
It may be a new day and a new Congress, but hope is already a scarce commodity.
Paul Whelan, U.S. citizen, arrested in Russia on spying charges
The service said in a press release that an American national, Paul Whelan, was detained as part of a special operation. No other details were immediately available and the United States embassy in Moscow has so far not commented.
Nancy Pelosi was the first woman to ever serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. There is also Michigan's Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar, the first two Muslim women to be elected.
House Democrats are thumbing their nose at Trump by establishing a special committee on climate so the government can better respond to the urgency of global warming.
Most speakers have been elected with unanimous support from their party or a smattering of opposition.
President Trump, with (from left) Vice President Pence, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, addresses reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House about the government shutdown on Friday.
How has the shutdown come about?
Thursday marked the first day of divided government in Washington since Trump took office in January 2017. The House Democrats scheduled votes for their legislation to reopen the government just hours after the swearing-in ceremonies wrapped up.
But, the partial United States government shutdown has showed no sign of ending, as the stand-off between President Donald Trump and democrats continues.
"If Leader McConnell tonight would put the bill that's passing the House on the floor, it would pass", Schumer said, noting that the measures previously had been backed by Senate Republicans.
