Perkins, Zaccheaus lead Virginia over SC 28-0

31 December 2018

Although the 47-year old has led the Gamecocks to three-straight bowl games, the team has suffered at least four losses in each season Muschamp been patrolling the sidelines. Fortunately for them, they have other good skill players.

Virginia receiver Hasise Dubois reaches out to snare a pass while South Carolina's Israel Mukuamu defends in the Cavaliers' 28-0 win Saturday in the Belk Bowl. Virginia had 413 total yards.

Even when there were opportunities for SC to get into the contest, they were unable to capitalize. But it was the Gamecocks who ate crow.

In addition, this was the first-time the Gamecocks were shutout in their Bowl game history.

However, the Gamecocks would give it right back when senior strong safety Juan Thornhill picked off Bentley and returned it 54 yards to the SC 21-yard-line on his sixth interception of the season.

Virginia's defense dominated the first half, holding SC to just 160 total yards on five drives, including turning in a big fourth-and-1 stop at the U.Va. 42-yard line to end the Gamecocks' first possession.

Virginia has produced the game MVP in each appearance (2002, 2003 and 2018), and senior Olamide Zaccheaus became their second running back to earn the award. They raced toward the first down marker, and Perkins was a step faster, going out of bounds for a gain of eight. The Gamecocks didn't accomplish anything on their checklist.

He rushed for 81 yards and did beat the Gamecocks with his arm, completing 22 of 31 passes for 208 yards and three scores (no interceptions), and scrambled out of several potential sacks only to complete a big throw.

Virginia (8-5) beat SC (7-6) in dominant fashion, 28-0, winning the Belk Bowl in Charlotte. "Even when I might not make a play or he might not make a play, it's like, 'Who wants it on the next play?' We're the same that way". The last two were overtime decisions.

Virginia is one of the better stories in college football this season.

"I'm disappointed with the performance", SC head coach Will Muschamp said.

Court: Justice Ginsburg up and working after surgery
The projected date of Ginsburg's discharge from the hospital and her return to the court are unknown at this time. Despite this, Trump took to Twitter to wish her a speedy recovery, as did her legions of supporters.

The Cavaliers had plenty left and it showed from wire-to-wire.

Perkins said he felt chemistry with Zaccheaus the first day he transferred in past year from Arizona Western Community College - and his favorite target agreed. It goes to a 21-0 game, it changes our approach a little bit and they go to some exotic pressures and some different things and some double edge pressure and they did a nice job of designing some things there. I'll get grief for crying, but I've been through a lot here. "We wanted to win this game".

Bentley said he didn't play well at all.

South Carolina's leading receiver is WR Deebo Samuel with 39 receptions.

"[Virginia] was schemed up and did a really good job of disguising their coverages", USC's Bentley said.

"We've been working that play I don't know how long", Nevada quarterback Ty Gangi said.

"Just very thankful", Dungey said, talking through tears. "They got after us and it's my responsibility". "They played exactly as they prepared".

SC (7-5) finished fourth in the SEC East this season, and all five of their losses were to bowl teams now ranked in the top 25.

"We just came out here with the mindset that we can't be beat", Perkins said. "And he's a guy that you appreciate as a coach, watching him play". And Mendenhall makes sure they are reminded of what happened with Navy. The Cavaliers were picked to finish last in the ACC Coastal this season, but they found a way to win seven games this season.

With Hall and Darrius Bratton at corner, and Joey Blount and Brenton Nelson at safety, the Cavaliers' secondary should be strong again next year. "That's not the outcome that we want so we're doing everything we can this year to forget about the past, but also to work off it as well".
