Trump again threatens to close southern U.S. border over wall funding

29 December 2018

Opponents, especially in the Democratic party but also some in Trump's Republican party, say that a physical wall is impractical and that the idea is being used as a political tool to whip up xenophobia in Trump's right-wing voter base. Only a few lawmakers presided over the brief sessions, while congressional leaders and rank-and-file members were nearly entirely absent.

"We build a wall or we close the southern border", he said in a series of Friday morning tweets.

President Trump has long made the case that physical border security is critical to America's interests, both for our national security and the preservation of our national sovereignty.

President Donald Trump is threatening to close the US border with Mexico if Democrats in Congress don't agree to fund the construction of a border wall. Republicans have only 51 seats, so they will need to try to persuade some Democrats to back the measure. To this end, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on Thursday took to Twitter, posting a link to a letter template that federal workers can use to explain their situation to creditors, mortgage companies and landlords.

When House Democrats assume the majority next Thursday for the new session of Congress, they plan to "swiftly" bring up a bill to reopen the government, Hammill added.

Jose Mourinho blames Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes for his sacking
The France global clearly did not see eye to eye with Mourinho and has not started the last three Premier League games. Cardiff City: Three wins in their last six games has this club out of the relegation zone for the time being.

"Nancy Pelosi is only looking to protect her speakership but not protect our borders and that's why she's unwilling to negotiate with us and unwilling to make any type of a deal and unwilling to help do what is necessary", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on the CBS "This Morning" program. "Last night they called us and said that they weren't even going to counter that".

Mulvaney said the Democrats rejected the White House's counteroffer of "a number less than $5 billion", which is what Trump wants for the wall. Central Americans are also deeply integrated in the U.S. economy, often performing physically demanding, low-pay jobs in construction, agriculture and other vital sectors.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Pence proposed spending $2.5 billion on border security, including the wall, in a stopgap spending bill during his Friday and Saturday meetings with Schumer on Capitol Hill last week.

But even that may be hard without a compromise because the Senate will remain in Republican hands and Trump's signature will be needed to turn any bill into law. "Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?"

Trump also threatened to cut off aid to Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, countries from which many migrants have fled.
