USA government shutdown could stretch to Thursday

25 December 2018

Vice president Mike Pence and White House officials were on Capitol Hill late on Friday night trying to broker a compromise over funding for the wall, which is staunchly opposed by Democrats.

"We saw some folks are raising money for a border wall to keep out our migrant siblings and fellow human beings, who are fleeing violence and persecution and whose tragically-underpaid labor is essential to the USA economy", the admins wrote on the page bio.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer voted for the Secure Fence Act, which passed the Senate on an 80-19 vote.

The president has been attacking Democrats over the wall on Twitter, and continued on Monday. The House and Senate gaveled into session for a few minutes on Christmas Eve before quickly closing again with no further action.

Less than one week after a GoFundMe page was set up to help pay for the border wall, another account was set up for those with opposite views.

Wednesday is the first day taxpayers could begin to feel the effects of a shutdown, Mulvaney said.

"We moved off of the five and we hope they move up from their 1.3", Mulvaney said.

"I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security", US President Trump wrote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Trump and the Democrats need to resolve the dispute over boarder funding before he brings up legislation to end the shutdown in the Senate.

Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia - a state bordering the USA capital that is home to many federal workers - urged Trump in a letter Saturday to push immediate action to end the shutdown, saying it "inflicts real harm" on workers.

If you stick through the credits in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, you'll get a fun joke involving yet another Spider-Man. As with prior DLC, three new suits will be available for players to unlock.

Even if House Democrats pass a bill in January with no wall funding, and the Senate goes along, there's no indication Trump would sign it or that Republicans would override the president to reopen the government - which requires a two-thirds vote in each chamber.

According to a report by Democrats on the senate appropriations committee, more than 420,000 federal employees deemed essential would continue to work without pay during a partial shutdown, including about 41,000 law enforcement and corrections officers and almost 150,000 Homeland Security employees.

The president canceled his Christmas vacation to his Florida resort because of the impasse with Congress.

How long is the shutdown expected to last?

The White House, meanwhile, said Trump was meeting Monday afternoon with DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen and other department officials "to discuss border security".

"It's Christmas Eve and President Trump is plunging the country into chaos", the two said in a joint statement.

Due to the shutdown - which saw several key United States agencies cease operations at 12:01 am (0501 GMT) Saturday - Trump will remain in Washington over Christmas instead of going to Florida, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

However, he needs to find 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate, where the Republicans now have 51, so he needs to enlist the support of Democrats there. Rather than work around the clock to try to end the shutdown, as they had done in the past, the leaders of the House and the Senate effectively closed up shop.

"There is no question that her speakership seems to be in balance against border security", the South Carolina Republican told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime". All told, the administration says, he wants 700 miles of wall at a total cost of $18 billion.
