Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called on McConnell to apologise to Ford "for labelling her allegations a 'smear job, '" adding, "I challenge you, Leader McConnell, if you are so convinced this is a smear campaign, you'll have no problem with an FBI investigation to prove your case".
Mr Kavanaugh said Dr Ford's friend does not remember being at a party with him, nor has anyone corroborated the accuser's story.
Trump, at the United Nations in NY, declared that Kavanaugh is "outstanding", and added, "I am with him all the way".
Democrats have accused Republicans of not conducting a thorough review in their rush to get Mr Kavanaugh confirmed.
Kavanaugh has denied her allegations that he assaulted her at a party when they were in high school.
In his letter, Kavanaugh said that those who are alleged to have witnessed the two events say either that they have no recollection, or that they simply did not happen.

The interview comes a day after another woman went public with a new set of sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh strongly denied that claim as a "smear". His family has suffered. Deborah Ramirez alleged in a story published by The New Yorker Sunday night that while she and Kavanaugh both attended Yale University in the early 1980s, he pulled down his trousers and exposed himself to her.
"The Senate simply can not in good conscience vote on this nomination without a full fair FBI investigation of all these allegations", he said.
The Kavanaugh controversy is unfolding just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from Republicans, against a backdrop of the #MeToo movement fighting sexual harassment and assault. Fox News is famously Trump's favorite news channel, a bond formalized in the summer with the appointment of the former Fox News co-president Bill Shine as deputy White House chief of staff.
