Meghan Markle Gives First Royal Speech as Duchess of Sussex

21 September 2018

I'm just as excited as you are.

It turns out that the charity recipe book the Duchess of Sussex has thrown her support behind has rocketed to the top of Amazon's bestseller list on pre-orders alone.

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together", the former "Suits" actress said in a statement on The Royal Foundation's website. "I'm serious", she told the women, adding that Markle "felt very much at home" while working in the kitchen.

The duchess's mother Doria Ragland was a surprise visitor for the launch of the cookbook, which will raise funds for the Hubb Community Project created last summer by survivors of the blaze that killed 71 people after engulfing the 24-storey social housing block in west London.

Harry was on hand to support Meghan as she celebrated the launch of the cookbook she helped to produce, called Together: Our Community Cookbook.

"On a personal level, I feel so proud to live in this city that can have so much diversity".

Before lunch, Meghan delivered a three-minute speech to her guests, in which she described the charity cookbook as a "passion project" and a "labour of love".

Violent crime with multiple victims is rare in Australia but this was the second major incident in Western Australia this year. Western Australia assistant police commissioner Paul Steel said: "This is early and we've not yet fully examined the scene".

Ms Ragland said: "I'm so glad I can put the face with the recipes".

The pair were out and about with Meghan's mom Doria Ragland to promote the release of the Duchess's new cookbook.

Zahira Ghaswala, the Hubb's co-ordinator who hosted Meghan's first visit to the kitchen, said about the book's sales: "As far as I know, on Amazon we're number one - everything's just been a positive vibe out there".

Meghan and Harry then sat down to eat with the women and their guests, including those from the local community, to enjoy a series of dishes that incorporated a blend of cultures.

She phoned their mother, who was with them on the 19th floor to warn them about the fire - giving them enough time to get out of the building.

We also think it's wonderful to bring her mother along here.
