Hurricane Florence by the (frightening) numbers

13 September 2018

The National Hurricane Center said it had winds of 210 kilometers (130 miles) per hour and a threat of "life-threatening storm surge and rainfall".

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed declarations of emergency for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, freeing up federal resources for storm response. "These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction [as] the storm's motion".

Officials can't overstate the potential danger the storm could bring, with the National Weather Service recently saying Florence will likely be the "storm of a lifetime" for the Carolina coast.

More than a million people have been urged to evacuate from the storm's path.

Another FEMA spokesman said: "I need to re-emphasise this is a risky storm". They were expecting to be in SC for 10 to 14 days, according to a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Saturday morning and could become a Category 5 storm with winds up to 175 miles per hour.

He warned people in surrounding areas to "remain vigilant" and expect flash floods at the start of next week.

Computer simulations - especially the often star-performing European model - push the storm further south, even into SC and Georgia.

One woman told MSNBC she would be staying at home in Wilmington, NC with her two children despite the storm.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency "in light of the storm's forecasted southward track after making landfall".

The storm, which is building up over the Atlantic, is due to make landfall in either North or SC within the next few days, and is expected to be the worst storm to hit the area in 30 years.

"Hurricane Florence is the strongest storm to target the Carolinas and this part of our country in decades", Byard said. The storm caused an estimated $125 billion of damage along the Gulf Coast.

The prison, home to nearly 1,000 prisoners and up to 119 staff, was ordered to stay put even during an initial mandatory evacuation for surrounding Jasper County.

On the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale Florence is a Category 4, meaning it is capable of causing "catastrophic damage". SC has an open date October 20 and also could play on December 1 if it does not qualify for the SEC Championship Game.
