A new book from Bob Woodward, who, in the last millennium, reported on the Watergate scandal of the Richard Nixon era, says President Trump is "crazy", is "unhinged" and loses his temper. He said his book is drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand participants and witnesses that were conducted on "deep background", which meant he could use the information but not reveal its source.
The Republican president said in a Twitter post that quotes in the book attributed to Defense Secretary James Mattis, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and others "were made up frauds, a con on the public".
U.S. President Donald Trump wanted to have Syrian President Bashar al-Assad assassinated previous year but his defense secretary ignored the request, according to a new book that depicts top Trump aides sometimes disregarding presidential orders to limit what they saw as damaging and unsafe behavior.
"The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true".
Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis is quoted as explaining to Trump why the United States maintains troops on the Korean peninsula to monitor the North's missile activities. "He's this dumb southerner".
Dowd would go on to meet with Mr Mueller and reportedly tell him that he couldn't agree to the interview because he didn't want to let the president "look like an idiot" and embarrass the nation on the world stage.
"Don't testify. It's either that or an orange jumpsuit". Then Woodward mentions Senator Lindsey Graham swore he told the president. "This guy is mentally retarded", the President continued. Trump told Porter that Sessions was a "traitor" for recusing himself from overseeing the Russian Federation investigation, Woodward writes.
Mattis is also said to have disregarded Trump's instructions to assassinate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, telling Trump he would come up with a plan before going with a decidedly more measured approach to air strikes in Syria.
The defense chief said in his statement that "responsible policy making in the real world is inherently messy", though "it is also essential that we challenge every assumption to find the best option".
Militants in Idlib planning ‘false flag’ chemical attack: Russian MoD
During a public session on Syria at the United Nations on Tuesday, Russia denied any possibility of a chemical attack in Idlib by the Syrian government.
Woodward's work also comes weeks after former White House aide and "Apprentice" contestant Omarosa Manigault Newman published an expose on her time in the West Wing, including audio recordings of her firing by Kelly and a follow-up conversation with the president in which he claimed to have been unaware of Kelly's decision.
"Let's [expletive] kill him. This is the worst job I've ever had". You're just tapping me along.
For his part, Dowd says he never called the president a liar. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything.
At one point Mr Kelly, the chief of staff, reportedly said of Mr Trump during a staff meeting: "He's an idiot".
The Post report on Tuesday recounts a National Security Council meeting on January 19, citing Woodward's upcoming book, "Fear: Trump in the White House".
The book also details Trump's preoccupation with the Mueller investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and whether Trump's campaign colluded with that effort.
Woodward goes through a lengthy list of enemies that Trump's continued to make within his own administration.
When White House economic adviser Cohn tried to resign after the president offered sympathetic comments about white nationalists who engaged in a violent August 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Mr Trump accused him of "treason".
