Inbound Australian PM Scott Morrison gives his first address

27 August 2018

He proved out of step with most Australians past year when he unsuccessfully campaigned against Australia legislating to allow gay marriage.

But in the interview with Women's Weekly he said his beliefs did not define his politics. "It was extraordinary. It was described as madness by many and I think it's hard to describe it in any other way".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been one of the first world leaders to congratulate Australia's incoming Prime Minister Scott Morrison and says he has been involved proactively in promoting New Zealand to the world in the past.

Tony Abbott has been described as former Howard Government Minister Amanda Vanstone as a "wrecker".

Mr Morrison has been dubbed the "accidental prime minister" because he had no plans to nominate until Thursday when Mr Turnbull declared he would not recontest his job.

Mr Turnbull confirmed he will be leaving politics, but when exactly that will be is not yet known. "I love Australia. I love Australians", he said on Friday. "It is not a secret".

He said Dutton had yet to prove he has majority backing from the Liberal Party - a requirement for him to force another meeting to have a second crack at the top job ahead of national elections due by mid-2019.

"We affirmed the strength of the relationship between the USA and Australia". "There has been no explanation from either the outgoing or incoming prime minister".

Scott Morrison is Australia's next prime minister after defeating Peter Dutton in the race to replace Malcolm Turnbull.

"As you're all aware, there was a ballot conducted in the party room for the leadership of the Liberal Party", Government Whip Nola Marino said at a press conference a short time ago.

The board had confirmed earlier this month that it had "met several times over the last week" to discuss going private. The special committee has retained lawyers - Latham & Watkins - in addition to a legal team used by the company.

The delay and the early provision of the Solicitor-General's advice give Treasurer Scott Morrison extra opportunity to build support for his own bid for the leadership as an alternative to Dutton.

The new socially conservative leader of the country's Liberal party said last November, after 61% of Australians voted in favour of introducing marriage equality, that as many - if not more Australians - wanted to see laws introduced that would protect religious freedom.

"This was won in an overwhelming sense, in a majority and absolute majority by Josh Frydenberg", she said. After he came close to winning the prime ministership in a surprise spill at a Liberal Party caucus meeting, he could have made a tactical retreat to the backbench, waiting to strike again at a moment of his choosing.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was also in the running for the leadership, but did not make it to the final round.

In his time as treasurer, Mr Morrison promoted the economic theory of growing overall wealth to solve financial shortfalls, believing when there's more to go around, everyone wins.

Michaelia Cash, Mathias Cormann and Mitch Fifield have announced they won't back Malcolm Turnbull.

The fresh outbreak of political instability was met with renewed public disgust towards the political class - already among the least trusted profession in the country despite an unprecedented era of prosperity.

"In the minds of a lot of Australians, anyone would be better than Malcolm Turnbull as leader of the Liberal Party".

"It has 43 signatures".
