Fox News hosts react to the Trump-Putin summit

17 July 2018

The strong words come one day after a controversial summit between Putin and Trump in Finland, where the US president appeared to blame his own country for poor relations with Moscow and accept the Russian leader's denials of having interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Standing alongside the Kremlin boss, Trump acknowledged that his intelligence chiefs believe Russian Federation hacked and leaked Democrats' emails containing politically damaging information about his rival Hillary Clinton.

Abortion-rights activists dressed as heavily pregnant Donald Trumps demonstrated on the streets of Helsinki, just a stone's throw away from where the United States and Russian presidents are scheduled to meet.

"I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression", he said. Question for President Trump as he meets Putin: "Do you know which team you play for?"

But this does not mean it was a mistake for Trump to meet with Putin in the first place, or that the theory-promoted just days ago by NY magazine's Jonathan Chait-that Trump is some sort of Russian agent (and has been since 1987!) holds water.

"My people came to me - Dan Coats came to me, some others - they said they think it's Russia", Trump said, referring to the director of national intelligence. Russia's political and media establishment heralded the summit as a victory for Putin in breaking down Western resolve to treat Russian Federation as a pariah.

What did he say at the summit with Putin?

USA intelligence officials have said they're confident that the Kremlin was behind the effort to help Trump defeat Clinton, and Mueller's indictment alleged that the culprits are part of a Russian military intelligence agency known as the GRU.

"I'm not asking you if they were influenced, I'm asking you whether they tried", Wallace countered.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., described the meeting in Helsinki as a "tragic mistake". All are nervously watching Twitter to see if the President attempts further cleanup beyond his tweet after the event Monday when he said he has "GREAT confidence in MY intelligence people".

He even kissed the golden top of the World Cup trophy before it was presented to France captain Hugo Lloris. We got into the game and on counter attacks, we made the difference.

At the summit, Mr Putin again denied meddling in the USA election, and in a later interview dismissed longstanding reports that Russian intelligence may hold compromising material on Mr Trump.

Asked if Russia could extradite the 12 Russian military intelligence officers, Putin challenged the U.S.to take advantage of a 1999 agreement envisaging mutual legal assistance.

He says that while it is important to improve relations with Russian Federation on several issues, including Syria, the President must realize that Russian Federation did try to interfere in the elections, and that steps should be taken to block those attempts in the future.

It was an extraordinary press conference closing out the Trump-Putin summit, in which the American president delivered what amounted to a warm embrace to the man who for years has been isolated by the US and Western allies for Russia's activities in Ukraine, Syria and beyond. He also attacked his Democratic opponents and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and he said when asked about the election meddling that he held both countries accountable for their state of relations.

Brennan expressed total disbelief at Trump's news conference.

Colbert responded to Putin's question saying, "Yeah".

The leaders also met a year ago during a summit in Vietnam.

Trump's remarks have drawn widespread criticism from Democrats and Republicans. Monday, he reversed himself again, calling it an "interesting idea". (AAP) Malcolm Turnbull called Donald Trump a "patriot".
