Jimmy DeButts, an editor of the Capital Gazette, wrote in a series of tweets that he was "devastated and heartbroken" by the events.

Lt Ryan Frashure of Anne Arundel County Police said Thursday that "we did have" an active shooter in the building where The Capital Gazette is located, and there are injuries.

At least five people were killed and several others "gravely injured" in a shooting at the offices of The Capital newspaper in the USA state of Maryland, police said on Thursday. He has not been identified yet by officials. "Can't say much more and don't want to declare anyone dead, but it's bad", The Capital Gazette's Phil Davis wrote in a message posted after the shooting stopped.

Live video images showed people leaving the building, walking through a parking lot with their hands in the air. He said officers must look for other dangers, such as bombs and other shooters.

Police were on scene within 60 seconds, officials said, and cleared the building.

A Capital Gazette and Baltimore Sun photojournalist simply tweeted "Heartbroken", after police announced they'd detained the suspect and the fatalities were confirmed. Authorities said a reunification location was being established at the Lord & Taylor at Westfield Annapolis Mall.

Gerald Fischman, the editorial page editor at the Capital Gazette, was an "old-fashioned journalist", a former editor of the paper said.

Democrats welcomed Trump's apparent change of course but said he had only himself to blame. Trump had tweeted earlier on Wednesday that he was "working on something".

Thomas Marquardt, who retired in 2012, told CNN Friday that he went so far as to distribute photos of Ramos to his staff and to the front desk with instructions to call police if they saw him.

"Please, heed all warnings and stay away from the area".

President Trump said on social media that he had been briefed on the situation, and that his "thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families". The suit was thrown out, but according to the Baltimore Sun, the case was still working its way through the courts until 2015 - when an appeals court rejected a final attempt to press the case.

Police were also at the Sun newsroom, the newspaper reported.

The account was silent since January 2016, however, moments before the shooting, the account published a tweet that said, "F**k you, leave me alone".

According to the article, "out of the blue", Ramos sent a friend request on Facebook to a woman who had been a high-school classmate, thanking her "for being the only person ever to say hello or be nice" to him, the article said. "I don't know why".

Gunn said McNamara was workmanlike - "classic come to work and tell me what I need to do".
