Tumwater Police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said it all happened about 4:40 p.m. Sunday when officers were alerted to a possible carjacking near a gas station.
Police are investigating four scenes connected with the shooting.
The 44-year-old man, identified as Tim O. Day, was ultimately shot and killed outside the store by a 47-year-old Oakville man.
The Walmart Supercenter is a little over a mile north of where the suspect crashed his vehicle.
While police say the shots happened outside the Walmart, witnesses say they could hear the shots from inside the store. "And as he tried to hijack a second auto, a citizen who was in the parking lot took his gun and shot the suspect".
There he attempted to carjack another vehicle, shooting an occupant in it at least twice.
The suspect went on to try stealing another vehicle in the Walmart parking lot before being approached by two armed bystanders.

There, Wohl said police believe the suspect shot the 16-year-old girl and stole a auto. That is when the 16-year-old was injured, police said. Seconds later and after multiple shots were fired, the would-be hijacker lay dead, while the driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. But we still don't know if they both fired or only one of them did.
Kailani Bailey told the Tacoma News Tribune she was shopping inside the grocery section of the Walmart when a tall man in a T-shirt and jeans ran in and shoved people out of the way, ordering them to "move, move".
Another witness told KIRO her husband watched the shooter "take his last breath" after being shot by the armed citizen. The investigation is continuing, she said.
Caitlyn Wallner of Tenino was standing in the self-checkout line. She eventually found a woman in her auto near the parking lot exit and banged on the door to help.
As I said, there are parts of the story which still haven't been made entirely clear. Adams said, "He is a hero", I really think more people could easily have been shot with what this guy was doing. He said he heard about 15 shots.
He said a civilian with a gun confronted the gunman as he neared the civilian's family. When the driver of that auto backed away, the 47-year-old Oakville man shot Day and he died at the scene.
"He is a hero", shopper Brian Adams told King 5 News about the unnamed civilian.
