Prosecutors interview Comey as they consider whether to charge McCabe

The tweet seems to contradict past statements made by Trump himself.

Pressed on the abundant evidence that the decision to fire Comey was largely about Russia, Lee fell back on claiming that he has "yet to see any piece of evidence, any shred of evidence, any scintilla of evidence suggesting that there was in fact collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government". "The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!"

As a reminder, when he first announced the firing, Trump claimed it was on a recommendation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein-whom he said in the Holt interview was respected by everyone, but, now that the investigation has progressed, regularly attacks and threatens to fire.

Former Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe wrote a confidential memo last spring recounting a conversation that provided "significant behind-the-scenes" details on the firing of former FBI director James Comey, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

When Holt asked Trump whether he was "angry" with Comey "because of his Russian Federation investigation", the president replied, "I just want somebody that's competent".

McCabe was sacked after the Justice Department's watchdog said he lied to investigators reviewing the bureau's probe of Hillary Clinton's email server.

Trump's lawyers have cited Rosenstein's involvement in Comey's firing as proof that there was no effort to obstruct justice, the Times reported.

Giuliani asked Friday. "They clearly did not get incriminating information or we'd have found out about it by now". The Justice Department hasn't said what information will be shared with lawmakers and Kelly about the informant.

Comey told The Associated Press in an interview this month that he saw telling Trump privately - at a January 2017 Trump Tower meeting - that he wasn't under investigation as a way to lower the "temperature" of an otherwise tense encounter before the president took office.

But regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey, knowing there was no good time to do it.

He also said "leaks concerning specific investigative steps the U.S. Attorney's Office has allegedly taken are extremely disturbing".

In a separate tweet Thursday, Trump continued to insist that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had spied on his 2016 campaign and claimed that the media "is working overtime" to avoid reporting about it.

According to published reports, McCabe allowed two FBI officials to give information to the media about a separate criminal investigation of the Clinton Foundation.

"He fired Comey because Comey would not, among other things, say that he wasn't a target of the investigation", Giuliani said.

House Freedom Caucus members say Rosenstein impeachment document is "last resort"; chief congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel reports from Washington.

"I've talked with Director Mueller about this", Rosenstein said in an interview with The Associated Press a year ago.
