Trump's comments came a day after numerous excerpts from Comey's upcoming memoir, "A Higher Loyalty", were published online. "Mr Comey said the conversation went on until he finally said: "'We are not investigating you, sir.' That seemed to quiet him". In responding to Comey, the White House is choosing not to engage on specific claims, which have been reviewed by lawyers for accuracy, instead launching a broadside effort to undermine Comey's credibility.
Comey said he first informed Trump about the dossier in a private meeting that followed one where US intelligence officials briefed Trump on Russian interference in the 2016 election. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the awful job he did-until he was, in fact, fired.
The pair are engaged in an explosive showdown with Mr Comey's first major interview with ABC News scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday evening in the United States.
The dossier was compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele about Mr Trump's ties to Russian Federation and included an allegation that involved prostitutes.
He compares Trump's need for loyalty to that of a mob boss, claims that Trump repeatedly asked him to disprove lewd claims about him that surfaced in the so-called Steele dossier, and repeated the accusation that Trump told him to back off an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Mr Comey told lawmakers he had given copies of his memo memorialising his talks with Mr Trump to people outside the Justice Department and asked a friend to share its contents with a journalist.
Russian firms on brink as United States sanctions cause panic
Rusal, which produces about 7% of the world's aluminium, said it regretted its inclusion on the new USA sanctions list. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Moscow was looking at how to support the companies and sectors that have been hit.
Trump denied the allegations and said he might want the FBI to investigate allegations in the dossier to prove they were untrue, Comey told ABC.
Comey paints a devastating portrait of a president who built "a cocoon of alternative reality that he was busily wrapping around all of us". "It's possible, but I don't know".
It also includes strikingly personal jabs at Trump that appear sure to irritate the president.
On a grammatical note, it said, "Although Trump rendered the word as an open compound (slime ball) in his tweet, the traditional form is as a closed compound (slimeball)".
Democrats, who had been critical of Comey's handling of the Clinton investigation, defended him against Trump's attacks. He described Mr Trump as volatile, defensive and concerned more about how his own image than about alleged Russian meddling in the presidential election.
