Charlie Ebersol, whose father partnered with McMahon in the original XFL, co-founded the league with former NFL executive Bill Polian. They include Justin Tuck, Hines Ward, and Troy Polamalu among others.
Charlie Ebersol, the documentary filmmaker and son of longtime tv executive Dick Ebersol, announced Tuesday the AAF will play its inaugural season next year, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell. Ebersol says both the initial games as well as the championship, will be aired on CBS. Their strategy is going after the diamonds in the rough who seemingly get overlooked.
National Football League rosters are a zero-sum proposition; for every player who can't make it in the National Football League initially and who develops to the point where he can, he takes a job now held by another National Football League player. "We're looking for those Kurt Warners working in grocery stores, and we think we will find them".
The league will have eight teams in cities to be announced in the next three months.
Are you ready for some more football? There will be no kickoffs and innovations around onsides kicks in which teams can go for a fourth-and-1o from the 35-yard line to retain possession. Play clocks will be 30 seconds and every touchdown will be followed by a two-point conversion attempt. Fans will be able to stream Alliance matchups live via the free Alliance app while accessing integrated fantasy options with real rewards - for themselves and the players they are cheering on.
There are many rules differences to the National Football League as well.
Fatal Uber crash 'highlights challenges of autonomous cars alongside human drivers'
Uber immediately said it suspended testing of its self-driving cars in Tempe, Ariz., Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto. Responding to the news, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a tweet : "Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona ".
As far a rules, Polian told the AP there will be two replay challenges per game for each coach and no more along with no TV timeouts. Vince McMahon focused the XFL on what the NFL wasn't doing or was doing wrong to entice fans, Ebersol is focusing on people's love of fantasy football in watching the league by making it an integral part of the broadcast.
"Fifty-nine million people play fantasy and 20 million people play only fantasy football", he said. It's pretty hard to beat that level of experience just from how many combined seasons those men have played in the NFL. This is the big unknown.
And despite the dwindling numbers at football's youth level, Ebersol believes his league will survive because the NFL's 32 teams only allow for 1,700 players.
From the sound of ESPN's reporting, the league seems to be aiming to be more like the stable CFL than the exciting but volatile XFL.
Even in the most optimistic scenario, one of these two leagues will fold very quickly if a merger doesn't happen. There is just no way to get fans invested in new players, on new teams, in a new league that produces an inferior product. The Alliance of American Football was announced earlier today in a press release. They are also eliminating kickoffs to help with player safety, and there will be no extra points. The Alliance will provide players a comprehensive bonus system, post-football career planning as well as counseling and scholarship support for postsecondary education.
