Newly-elected MLAs of Meghalaya take oath

"We want the NPP to take the initiative and the BJP will provide full cooperation". He, however, retracted when leaders of the three parties told him that joining the Congress will not guarantee a stable government and the Modi government will starve the state of funds required for development. The BJP asked its ally to take a lead and NPP chief Conrad K Sangma is set to be the next CM of Meghalaya. But if NPP had made pre-poll alliances, it could have consolidated anti-incumbency against Congress.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president Amit Shah, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

The Congress is now in power in the state in what is a second consecutive term.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi said his party respected the mandate of the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya where the Congress failed to come to power in the recently-concluded assembly polls. It has the support of six legislators from the United Democratic Party, four from People's Democratic Front (PDF), and two each from the HSPDP and the BJP, besides an Independent lawmaker Samuel Sangma.

On March 3 this year he pulled up victory in 19 of the 51 seats his party had contested, the biggest haul by any regional party in the past two decades, bagging 20.6 per cent of the vote share.

However, his performance at the combine has only helped his standing in the draft class. That may come off as boastful, but not when Barkley says it.

NPP's rise in the state has been impressive as it raised its tally to 19 seats from just two in the previous elections.

On Monday, Ardent Basaiawmoit, president of the HSPDP objected to Conard Sangma, a Lok Sabha member, being named to be the alliance's chief minister, without consulting all constituents. He is the youngest son of former Meghalaya chief minister and former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma.

After Congress emerged as the single largest party, top leaders Ahmed Patel, Kamal Nath, Mukul Wasnik and C P Joshi had approached the regional parties for support.

Along with Mr Sangma, 11 other legislators of the newly-formed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government were administered the oath of office and secrecy as Cabinet ministers.

Outgoing chief minister Sangma has alleged that the BJP has brought the regional parties together to piggy ride on them and fire from their shoulder in the state after formation the new government.
