Joey Barton trolls Scotland as he gives honest opinion on Scott McTominay

McTominay was born and raised in Lancaster, but his father, Frank, is Glaswegian and the player has chose to represent the Scots.

Hearts manager and director of football Levein, who managed Scotland between 2009 to 2012, hopes to see more young, eligible players commit their futures to Scotland in an "exciting" time for the national side, who face Costa Rica and Hungary in friendlies later this month. Who knows where, who knows in which division he would be playing now. "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

The academy product didn't seem to be a player capable of getting much game time this campaign due to his competition in midfield.

The former England midfielder, who is now banned from football after breaching betting rules, added: "Maybe Manchester United and Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] have influenced it".

"It is not easy and then national team will be just a effect of his work at the club but I can't confirm at all that both national teams have contacted him".

United were overtaken by Liverpool on Saturday but regained second spot thanks to Sunday's 2-1 comeback win against Chelsea.

Mourinho added: "I think the people around him are the right people".

"He's somebody who is going to play for the team, he's got the superstars around him and sometimes you need somebody to do that extra bit of work and be a real team player". It's about working hard and being willing to go that extra hard yard to cover for some of the flair players.

Scotland certainly have a talented player on their hands as well and would do well to build around him and other young Scottish stars in their bid to qualify for the next World Cup.

"He always wants the ball - he doesn't hide, takes responsibility and I think that's great for somebody around those superstars". Jose was spot on in saying there's a lot more to come from him.
