Pakistan court sentences Zainab's killer to death on four counts

24-year-old Imran Ali Naqshbandi was given four death sentences, a life sentence and a huge fine on Saturday by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan for mercilessly raping and murdering six-year-old Zainab Ansari last month.

Imran was arrested in January, two weeks after he raped and killed 7-year-old Zainab Ansari and threw her body on to a rubbish dump in the city of Kasur.

The rape and murder of Zainab Ansari was the 12th such case in Kasur district in the previous year, according to local media reports.

Imran Ali is sentenced to death on four counts but Zainab's mother deems this as insufficient for the crimes he committed.

"My daughter has gone, she will not come back, but I want to save daughters of other people", he said.

The prosecutors said he also received life imprisonment and fines totalling 3.2 million rupees ($30,000) for additional charges of hiding his victim's body.

State prosecutor Ehtesham Qadir said Imran Ali, who had pleaded guilty during the five-day trial, was in the courtroom for the verdict.

Two protesters died in rioting demonstrating against the police's delay in finding the killer.
