Michigan State's trustees board chooses performing president

27 January 2018

Mark Hollis resigned as Michigan State's athletic director on Friday, and during his announcement he reiterated what he has told investigators - he was unaware of any complaints about Dr. Larry Nassar before a September 2016 report in the Indianapolis Star.

Beekman will take over the presidency before Michigan State's trustees decide on a permanent replacement for Simon.

"I'm so truly sorry", trustee Brian Mosallam said, speaking to the scores of women who say Nassar abused them.

The athletic director also announced his retirement.

Lemke said outgoing MSU President Lou Anna Simon and other officials cared more about institutional repercussions and legal factors than they did about the students.

After Nassar was sentenced on Wednesday to 40 to 175 years in prison for multiple sex crimes, attention turned to Michigan State's handling of allegations that Nassar had abused athletes, some of which were MSU students.

He received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, his JD from Wayne State University Law School, and his undergraduate degree in justice, morality, and constitutional democracy from James Madison College at Michigan State University.

"And the fact that we have so many faces here saying that "time is up" and that we are going to be the change on this campus for the better says a lot about who we are".

The reality TV star announced the news on social media on Friday following the child's birth, via surrogate, on Monday morning. Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West arrive at the GQ Men of the Year Awards at the Royal Opera House, London.

Nassar worked for Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians, and both organizations are facing criticism over how they handled the abuse allegations.

Simon announced her resignation in an open letter on Wednesday.

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos confirmed Friday that her agency also is investigating the Nassar scandal.

In an emotional interview with ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas, airing Friday on "20/20", Lemke and her mother, Christy, said Klages defended Nassar as news of the scandal broke, characterizing the alleged sexual abuse as "a legal medical procedure".

"If that means holding people accountable, seeking out truth and bringing things to the light that's what we are here to do and we're here to make sure that this will never happen again". MSU campus police and Title IX investigations began.

The meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, a Republican who is running for governor, has said he will conduct a review of what happened at Michigan State, and issue a report and recommendations.
