The United States on Monday vetoed a resolution supported by the 14 other U.N. Security Council members that would have required President Donald Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a vote that showed the depth of global opposition to the US move. It affirmed "that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council". The Council's other 14 members, including France and Britain, all voted in favor.
In an effort to keep Washington from exercising its veto power, the text did not mention the U.S. by name, saying instead it "deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem". "It won't be forgotten", - US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said after the vote.
"The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy", Haley told the council after the veto.
Haley told the council "the United States has never been more committed to peace in the Middle East", and called accusations that the U.S.is setting back the prospect for peace "scandalous".
Since the advent of Trump's presidency, U.S. policy has grown increasingly hostile towards the Palestinian factions, edging closer in support of Israel.
Resolutions presented to the council require nine votes for adoption, but the United States - along with Britain, China, France and Russian Federation - have the power to veto any measure.
The U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that rejected the establishment of diplomatic facilities in the contested city of Jerusalem, breaking with the rest of the council.
