Google for India: Navigation for two-wheelers, Android Oreo Go among new launches

Like the Files Go app, the Google Go app comes with devices that come pre-installed with Android Oreo (Go Edition), and, is meant for entry-level devices. However, it said that the features would be the same ones as available for Android and iOS devices. The objective is to reach out to a larger user base and share the recent Android experience even with those who use entry-level devices.

Devices running the entry-level version of Android Oreo will also come with Google's data-saver features turned on by default. Google Assistant, a Siri-like app that responds to voice commands on a phone, can now crack jokes with Bollywood references and even respond to commands in Indian languages. As explained above, these apps have been optimized to take up as little space as possible.

The Android Oreo version also boasts the same security features as all others, with in addition Google Play Protect built-in. Google says that the Android Oreo Go edition will offer benefits like 30 percent faster startup time and storage space optimisation by up to 2X.

Google today conducted the third edition of its annual "Google for India" event in Delhi.

Sagar Kamdar, Android's director of product management, said there are now two billion devices running the operating system around the world, with more users in India than the US.

Caesar Sengupta, Vice President, Next Billion Users, Google, in a blogpost said, "Every day, millions of smartphones run out of space". Google Go, a new app to find information, optimises data by up to 40 percent, weighs less than 5MB in size, and has a simple, tappable interface. Google Go is available as a preview starting today on the Google Play Store in India. In tests over the last month, the average user saved 1GB of space.

Google's Play Store will also include a new section aimed at apps for entry-level devices, although these devices should also be able to download any app, assuming that there's room for it.

Google touts the Assistant for JioPhone as a special version designed for the JioPhone, and of course, it's built for India.

Google also announced launch of bill payments on Tez. "It was this winning spirit that inspired us to create a new sustainable framework with Tata Trusts, that aims to deliver employment opportunities to Internet Saathis".
