Crimes Against Foreigners Increased in India in 2016, Shows Govt

Rape cases reported 12.4% increase from 34,651 cases in 2015 to 38,947 cases in 2016. When it comes to sexual harassment, Andhra Pradesh, with 1,305 cases, is behind only three States in the country.

The national capital recorded the highest crime rate (974.9), followed by Kerala a (727.6), Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Assam in 2016 in IPC crimes.

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5 percent) and 4,816 (12.4 percent) respectively followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7 percent) past year, according to the NCRB data.

In this category Orissa is second after New Delhi which reported a crime rate of 43.6 in this category.

In terms of crime against women, the numbers dropped 11% in 2016 as compared to 2015, which put the UT at 11th place among all states and UTs. The rate for violent crime in Mumbai stands at 33.1 cases per lakh as against the average of 40.6 in the top metropolitan cities of the country.

Total 84,746 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty were reported in 2016.

The national capital also recorded the highest crime rate of 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2 and reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent), followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases). The total number of cases in 2015 was 6,276 and in 2016, the number is 6,568 - an increase by 4.7%. Maharashtra reported highest 11,396 cases, followed by UP with 11,335 cases and MP with 8,717 cases. Of the four major offences - criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, and counterfeiting - the highest number of cases were reported under cheating.

A total of 1,11,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) were reported missing in which maximum children missing were reported from West Bengal (15.1%) during 2016.

In the city of Delhi - which also reported the highest number of crimes against women among the 19 metropolitan cities - 13,803 crimes against women were reported in 2016.

Among the other states, Uttar Pradesh (UP) recorded the highest number of serious offences like murder.

Delhi also reported the highest number of kidnappings and abductions - 5,453 cases (48.3 percent) followed by Mumbai with 1,876 cases (16.6 percent) and Bengaluru 879 cases (7.8 percent) during 2016.

Delhi city topped all of NCRB crime categories - kidnapping and abduction, murder, rape, cruelty by husband and his relatives, dowry deaths, juveniles in conflict with law, economic offences - apart from cyber crimes.
