Connecticut Grown Christmas Tree Farms Opening This Week Statewide

26 November 2017

The growers we spoke with at the Capitol Market say they have plenty of trees to get through the season.

It's a tradition here in Southwest Louisiana: shopping for Christmas trees the day after Thanksgiving.

Reports show the National Christmas Tree Association pointed to tree prices being on the rise- prices ranging due to type, size and where you buy a tree.

John Foder also adds that the shortage has been impacting the most from those trees he has to import, specifically in Pennsylvania and the Carolinas, like the Frazier Fir.

When choosing, he said, you want needles "that snap like a fresh carrot".

Wholesale prices of trees from the northwest have gone up almost 50 percent this year due to the shortages.

While this is the first year customers will notice less options in their neck of the woods, it could be four or five more years before the Christmas tree supply meets current demand.

The Grant Christmas Tree Farm is located at 716 Whitaker Road, Grant. He said this isn't the first time there's been a shortage, but this year there are even fewer than previous years. Now, 10 years later, there are fewer trees to harvest.

"In the last five years, the prices at the farm have nearly more than doubled,"Falco said".

"We don't know when the drought's coming back, and prices don't go down just because the drought went away, you know, temporarily", New said.

"Locally", he said, "we should be fine".

However, Falco is battling the problem by also offering a lower line of trees that are more affordable. "Christmas tree farmers are pretty much oldtimers".

When a tree is cut, more than half its weight is water, proper care is good for the tree and your home.
