Nationals Hire Dave Martinez As New Manager

30 October 2017

After falling in five games to the Cubs in the NL Division Series, Washington opted to fire Dusty Baker after two seasons and 192 victories. The last rookie manager to lead a team to a World Series title was Bob Brenly with the Diamondbacks in 2001.

Martinez, 53, has served as Joe Maddon's bench coach since 2008, with the Tampa Bay Rays and then the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs have another vacancy to fill, as one of Joe Maddon's top lieutenants has accepted another job. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time. Wade Boggs, a friend and former teammate of Martinez with the Rays, tweeted his congratulations.

Trump And NFL Debate Over National Anthem Kneeling
Earlier this week NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with about half of the NFL owners. It did not indicate how many signatures had been received.

In the Nationals, Martinez will inherit a team with a stellar bullpen, MVP-caliber player Bryce Harper and a strong lineup, but it remains an organization unable to break through the NLDS. Two years later, Williams was sacked following a debacle in 2015. He has interviewed for several openings in recent years, including the Nationals job four years ago, but to date has not been selected. He was told he wasn't returning a week into the offseason. The Lerner Family earned a reputation for putting little value on managers, a reputation born out in their unwillingness to provide extensions to veterans like Baker (or, famously, Jim Riggleman), and in their initial offers to candidates over the years. It is believed the announcement is only being delayed out of deference to the Series, and MLB's wish that teams avoid major announcements during baseball's showcase.

According to reports, Martinez's deal will be for three years, with a club option for a fourth year, and will be announced following the conclusion of the World Series.
