Temple Community Shaken Up By Student's Murder

Hupperterz was formally charged with the murder of Burleigh on Sunday, a day after they found the girl's body on the property of Hupperterz's grandmother.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, state police officers found and arrested Hupperterz at his grandmother's home in Hawley, Pa., about 140 miles north of Philadelphia in Wayne County.

The investigation quickly focused on Hupperterz, police said. She said she did not know who the woman was, but heard screams and ran outside to see what was going on.

"He tried claiming he was on the football team", Temple senior Ahmad Goode said.

"She spent a lot of time combating racism and sexism, and she very much defended the rights for the LGBTQIA plus community", Madaus said.

Investigators say Hupperetz killed Burleigh with a blunt instrument and strangulation in or close to his Philadelphia apartment in the early hours of Thursday 31 August after the pair left a bar together.

Burleigh was with Hupperterz at around 2 Pub Web near Temple's main campus.

"There is a lot of sadness and mourning over the entire campus for her loss", said Sarah Madaus, the student government communications director.

Burleigh had transferred as a junior from Montgomery County Community College, majoring in film and media arts.

In a Facebook post shared Saturday, Edward Burleigh called his daughter a "beautiful angel" who is now in heaven.
