Walmart will use Google to reach the digital consumer

In addition to giving Google the ability to access purchase histories for Walmart customers who have connected their Walmart accounts to Google Express, Google announced that it will be offering free shipping on Google Express orders that meet its partner retailers' minimum thresholds. Shoppers will be able to choose from hundreds of thousands of Walmart products. "Walmart has been really trying to increase their online presence in the previous year - they're trying to raise their digital IQ, so to speak - and what better way to do that than with Google?".

Walmart joins other major retailers, including Costco, Whole Foods Market, and Bed, Bath & Beyond that are part of Google's shopping and delivery service. It is also beefing up its website: now offers more than 67 million products, a 30 percent increase since the first quarter of this year. Categories will include clothing, non-perishable groceries, and household staples.

Existing Walmart customers will also be able to link their Walmart account to Google to receive personalized shopping results based on online and in-store purchases. But customers can only complete one transaction at a time, from order to purchase, via the voice feature.

"Our new voice shopping capability, coupled with our core value proposition, including free two-day shipping and the Pickup Discount, will give our customers a compelling new way to get what they need at low prices", Marc Lore, President and CEO, Walmart US eCommerce wrote in the post. Together, they figure they can profit in the future of shopping.

Google Express was launched in 2013 to make Google the top go-to destination for those browsing and buying online. But how much of a success this move will turn out to be, remains to be seen.

Amazon's Echo, Echo Dot, and now Echo Show have given the company the lead when it comes to voice activated shopping.

And for the Walmart, this is the new zone of battle which will be opened by it for its competitor Amazon.

Amazon's AI virtual assistant Alexa already enables users to shop directly from the online retail giant. While both Google Home and Amazon Alexa are popular, especially in the U.S., they are mostly used to go simple things like calling and searching.
