Police have been gradually reopening the site.

The Temple Mount is holy to Jews as the site of their ancient temple, and to Muslims as the site of where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have risen.

The checks were introduced at the holy site, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and Israelis as Temple Mount, on Sunday after two Israeli police officers were killed there in a terrorist attack last week. Two officers were lightly hurt, she said. The Waqf also urged Muslim to boycott the Temple Mount! Employees of the Muslim administration, or Waqf, stayed on Jordan's payroll. Most countries would severely crack down on them, shut the Mount's mosques for an extended period, and take really forceful action.

It was the second day of Muslim protest against what they call a violation of the status quo in the flashpoint compound.

Safadi told ambassadors from Europe and Asia that ending tensions is in the hands of Israel which he said should immediately reopen the shrine without any hindrances. The three Israeli Arabs from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm who carried out the attack all held identity cards, allowing them the same freedom of movement as anyone else.

The fate of the compound, holy to both Jews and Muslims, is an emotional issue and forms the centerpiece of rival Israeli and Palestinian national narratives. The mosque is Islam's third holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

While the Wakf has rejected the metal detectors and called on Muslim worshipers not to go through them in order to enter the Temple Mount, the police have said the detectors are meant to ensure security and were put in place after weapons were found at the site.

Hamdallah warned that the measures could destabilise the wider region. Palestinians say the Israeli measures are aimed at paving the way for the Judaization of the city.

There were protests in Jordan against Israel over the closure and the installation of metal detectors, despite a peace treaty between Amman and Israel.

Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, condemned the attack in a telephone conversation he initiated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Palestinian authorities and the worldwide community do not recognise Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem, occupied in 1967, and later annexed by Israel. It's about Israeli encroachment on a religious site administered by Muslims. Jewish groups have capitalized on the absence of Waqf (Islamic trust) officials in recent days to take advantage of relaxed police regulations governing Jewish visits to the site, including teaching Torah lessons and saying short prayers. Dozens of worshipers held prayers outside the compound.
