CATCH THEIR SIGNAL: Public demonstration of emergency communications scheduled this weekend

The Portsmouth Amateur Radio Club came together on Saturday and Sunday at Mound Park for an amateur radio field day to hone their skills as amateur radio operators, and make as many contacts as possible with other operators around the country and around the world.

Amateur radio is an important tool, as people can often still use it to communicate when all else fails, according to Steven Czaikowski, who was stationed in the Morse code trailer.

Howard Thompson, with the Germantown Fire Department explained.

Amateur radio operators all over the country participate in the field day and host events similar to the one hosted by the Portsmouth Amateur Radio Club. "We've seen it go down on several occasions, and the radio operators can perform their duties without any of the modern conveniences around".

I used it to learn about the coverage of our local repeater, but also to hear what the effects were when two local radios were both using the same repeater and high power at the same time.
