GJM rules out talks with West Bengal govt

19 June 2017

Thirty-six policemen were injured, five received gunshot wounds and two were injured by sharp weapons in clashes with the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha activists as call for a separate Gorkha state turned violent in Darjeeling on Saturday.

"It was the GJM activists who opened fire", he said.

In the midst of all the violence and unrest in the district, the worst affected is the tourism sector as thousands of tourists have fled Darjeeling - known as the Queen of the Hills - since clashes broke out on June 8 between the GJM and the government forces.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata that the assistant commandant of the IRB 2nd battalion, Kiran Tamang, was critically injured during the violence.

Her remarks drew a derisive response from BJP chief Amit Shah, who said she saw "conspiracy in everything".

"This is a deep-rooted conspiracy".

The meeting came a day after a team of the BJP and the Gorkha Janmukti Morch, which is leading the protests in Darjeeling, met the home minister seeking the Centres intervention.

Banerjee, who chaired a high level meet at the state secretariat in Nabanna that was participated by various development boards of the hills, asserted her resolve to restore peace in the hills.

Aaron Smith will start after a horror end to last season, marred by publicity around a tryst with a woman in an airport toilet. Hurricanes duo Vaea Fifita and Jordie Barrett are the two new caps in the squad and will become All Blacks 1158 and 1159.

"We are not ready for talks with West Bengal government". They are only throwing bombs. However, the GJM has condemned all sorts of violence in the region and said that miscreants, rather than GJM volunteers, were involved in the violence. According to reports, the army has also been deployed in the area.

The protesters, carrying the body of a GJM activist, black flags and the Tricolour, assembled at the Chowkbazar. The cash counter of a hydel power plant was set on fire in Rimbick.

This afternoon, Mamata had said in Nabanna: "They (the protesters in the hills) are using arms and bombs". A senior police official said, "No one has been given permission to hold a rally in the hills".

Normal life has been hit for the past six days and on Sunday too shops remained closed while vehicles were off the road. The GJM has called an indefinite shutdown in the hills. "Nobody should resort to violence", the home minister said in a series of tweets.

"After the Bengal government tried to crush a peaceful protest by sending its police force to the hills, I see less chances of any compromise with the Bengal government", Sharma said.

Amidst the deteriorating law and order situation in Darjeeling, a police officer was stabbed today by protestors.

The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal has devised a two- pronged strategy to quell the ongoing crisis in Darjeeling hills and to isolate the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which is spearheading the agitation. Gorkhas have been agitating for decades for a new state of "Gorkhaland" within West Bengal, claiming Bengali-speaking outsiders have exploited their resources and imposed their culture and language.
