India & Pakistan to join SCO during landmark Astana summit

Zarif arrived in the Astana on Thursday to participate in the two-day SCO summit and the opening ceremony of Astana Expo 2017.

PM Modi said that connectivity with SCO countries is a great priority for India.

"In Pakistan, we are diligently implementing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a flag of the OBOR", the PM said and inquired: "What is more, these megaprojects will benefit the entire SCO community".

"China and India are two major countries and should focus on more cooperation alongside providing assistance to each other on developmental goals", Chinese foreign ministry Hua Chunying quoted Xi as saying.

China proposed that the SCO draw up a five-year outline for implementation of the Treaty on Long-term Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, Xi said. Pakistan fully subscribes to the Charter of SCO and the "Shanghai Spirit".

Its 2015 summit in Ufa in Russian Federation has formally adopted a resolution which started the procedures to admit India and Pakistan into the SCO.

Sharif said that we must all leave a legacy of peace and unity for our future generations and not a toxic harvest of conflict and animosity.

He continued that in the coming decades, the SCO, which has emerged as a "sheet anchor" for regional stability would serve as a strong link between Asia Pacific, East Asia, West Asia and the Atlantic region.

"SCO is destined to become a cornerstone of global politics and economics".

He said a number of issues came up for discussion, including economic cooperation, investment, connectivity, establishment of industrial parks, cooperation in railways, security and defence exchanges, counter-terrorism.

Talking of climate change, the PM said, "SCO can devote attention towards climate change".

"We have full faith that SCO would give new push to fight terrorism", Modi added.

-While Pakistan is becoming a member of the SCO, India has been pushing for a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations and for terrorism to be formally defined.

After wrapping up his historic visit to Kazakhstan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New Delhi in the wee hours of Saturday.

Later on June 9, wider talks will be held with the prime ministers of India and Pakistan and the leaders of SCO observer states Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia taking part.

He proposed setting up a media cooperation mechanism among the SCO member states, saying China would like to host the first SCO media summit.
