Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday inaugurated and laid foundation stone for various projects of the Kandla Port in Kutch district of Gujarat.

Modi is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, his home state where Assembly polls are due by the year-end, in which BJP has high stakes in retaining power. "They also have to organise events in their home State and constituencies (for MPs)", he said.

Mazumdar said people across the globe can also log on to the broadcaster's website to listen to Modi live.

"Today, as the country celebrates his birth centenary, I would like to make a suggestion to the Kandla Port Trust, Nitinji (Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping) and his department - why not name Kandla Port as the Deendayal Port Trust Kandla", he said.

Sunday afternoon clouds to bring 50 percent chance of thunderstorms
As of Sunday evening, the forecast is showing clear skies with highs in the low- to mid-80s for Memorial Day weekend. It won't sweep through fast enough to cool things down much as highs will still be in the upper 80s this afternoon.

The second crucial element was the universal biometric identification system called Aadhar, Modi said.

Addressing the public meeting after the dedication of the pumping station, Mr Modi appealed the people of Kutch to use the water judiciously. There is something very special about the land of Kutch and the people who live here.

He unveiled plaques to mark the laying of Foundation Stone for construction of the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Convention Centre; and the development of the 14th and 16th General Cargo Berth.

"The fiscal deficit, balance of payments deficit and inflation have all come down while the GDP growth rate, foreign exchange reserves and public capital investments have increased", Modi said while inaugurating the 52nd annual meeting of the African Development Bank here. The combination of infrastructure and efficiency is vital for the port sector to thrive, he said, adding that the Kandla Port has emerged as one of the finest in Asia. This is third and last pumping station on the 357-km Kutch Branch Canal, which takes off from the Narmada main canal in Banaskantha district and ends in Mandvi taluka of Kutch. "If India has to grab a bigger piece of global trade and surge ahead in competition, it is a must that we have the best of the ports", said Modi, the first PM to visit port city Gandhidham in 33 years.

Earlier on March 8, he had visited Gandhinagar to address women sarpanch from across the country on the International Women's Day.
