Free beer and live music planned for Record Store Day

23 April 2017

Record Store Day has itself been accused of exploiting collectors.

Set up in 2007, Record Store Day brings together independent record shops, music labels and artists to create one-off vinyl releases and encourage punters into their local stores.

Alongside 17-11-70, special releases on Saturday include two limited-edition David Bowie albums and several Prince singles, nearly a year to the day after the United States star's death.

"I just hate the thought that there wouldn't be a record store where I live."

The annual event pays homage to the neighborhood music store, the brick-and-mortar spot where people have long gathered to thumb through vinyl records. You can actually win one of these kits, worth $1500, by putting up a photo of your first ever record or CD or cassette on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #RSDWin and then entering through the form on the Record Store Day website.

Billboard reported that Record Store Day 2016 led to a "record" sales volume in vinyl albums - 383,000 units for week ending April 21.

The sheer number of solidarity marches and supporters highlight the widespread support for the grassroots movement. On Saturday, I will take the risk of further politicising my field because the stakes are too high to do nothing.

Back at Love Music, Mr McLean is getting preparing for what is comfortably the shop's busiest day of the year. We enjoy meeting music fans on the day, some of whom are regular customers and some newcomers.

He said: "Technology will evolve, but the beauty of a record is not going to evolve, it is what it is".

And thanks to the recent upsurge in popularity of vinyl, turntables now account for more than 20 per cent of Linn's global revenues, the highest level for 30 years.

National Record Store Day, April 22, is what prompted the celebration at Green Tangerine, said co-owner Justin Difazzio. "I mean, with the first one, we didn't even really know what they were trying to do; it's fantastic to remember that when this first started, there were like fifteen 7-inches and now there's like 3,000 releases. And we're proud of it, so we're really excited to finally let people hear it", Hamaker said.

"Big Star couldn't find much commercial success during its lifetime, but its album "#1 Record" has been highly regarded by music critics and fans decades after its release.

The line-up for Saturday's festivities runs from 10:00 a.m.to 8:00 p.m. Richard Lloyd, an American guitarist, singer and songwriter best known as a founding member of the rock band Television, is headlining the festival at 6:00 p.m. Like bookstores, record stores have had to become more efficient - and wiser - when it comes to inventory, supply chain management and customer service.
