Some show kids school is safe after San Bernardino shooting

16 April 2017

North Park Elementary School students and parents are reunited after a shooting at their school on April 10, 2017, in San Bernardino.

San Bernardino police have said nothing of what might have motivated Anderson to open fire in the special education classroom at North Park Elementary School on Monday.

He had endured heart surgery and many other challenges presented by Williams syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder marked by cardiovascular disease, developmental delays and learning disabilities, as well as impressive creative talents.

Cedric Anderson (right) threatened his estranged wife, Karen Elaine Smith (left), after she had moved out.

In a relationship that lasted about four years, the two married in January and were together until Smith left Anderson in the middle of March.

"The family wants, in the memory of Jonathan, for the nation to be aware and conscious of what Williams syndrome is", Superintendent Dale Marsden said.

The first photo of the 8-year-old boy shot dead by his teacher's estranged husband in California has been released, as details of the killer's dark past were revealed.

Police said they did not find a suicide note in their search of his home Monday in Riverside.

Karen Smith told her loved ones that she didn't necessarily take the threats from her new husband seriously but thought Cedric Anderson was reaching out for attention, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters. "I hope she is OK", Hendran said.

I wasn't really cheering for anybody on Sunday, but I have to admit, it was great to see Garcia break through. When the stranger beside me said, "I think he's going to go for it", I responded by saying, "You're insane".

A candlelight vigil will be held at North Park at 7 p.m. today.

Anderson then shot himself to death, police said. 53-year-old Karen Smith, a teacher at the school, was shot and killed by her 53-year-old husband. She said the long wait was "frustrating but also understandable".

"She keeps telling me, 'My teacher got shot, my friend got shot, '" her mother, Elizabeth Barajas, said as she clutched her daughter's blood-stained sweatshirt. Jonathan Martinez, 8, a student who happened to be near Smith, died at Loma Linda University Medical Center, and another student, a 9-year-old boy, was hospitalized and was reported to be in stable condition.

Children with the syndrome tend to have striking verbal abilities and an affinity for music, according to Marsden.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the children, their families and others affected by this senseless violence". Police officers stand guard outside North Park School after a deadly shooting Monday, April 10, 2017, in San Bernardino, Calif. "Jonathan loved just touching you".

Anderson seemed like a man of faith with whom she could share the next chapter of her life.

"She tried to hide it, but it's hard for her so we're just here for her trying to help her cope", Johnson's sister, Mercedes, said.

He said Anderson had faced a weapons charge, and those involving domestic violence and theft from 1982 to 2013.

"Unlike disorders that can make connecting with your child hard, children with Williams syndrome tend to be social, friendly and endearing", Superintendent Dale Marsden said, apparently reading from a description on the Williams Syndrome Association website.
