MMJ Regulation Bill Has Seen Many Amendments So Far in Montana Legislature

Elected officials could face up to a year in jail and lose their posts if convicted of official misconduct. They work to craft a final version of the bill, which both the House and Senate must approve.

The bill would have put the issue on the 2018 ballot.

The unclassified misdemeanor would have included a fine up to $1,000 per violation.

Republicans in the House killed a bill that would have granted a 1 percent raise in each of the next two years, but lawmakers say the raise could be inserted into a separate Senate bill.

The bill differs in important ways from its House counterpart, HB 7085 - which, among other features, could leave workers on the hook for their own attorney fees if they pursue baseless claims.

Opponents of the legislation, who fear it will alienate immigrants and make communities less safe, had hoped that the House proposal would be less punitive.

The House bill also kept in tact the Senate's requirement to include college campuses in the bill's provisions.

The full House will convene again at 4 p.m. on Monday, followed by the Senate at 5 p.m.

The Texas proposal is now stalled by House Republicans who oppose the measure.
