Erdogan had branded the Netherlands "Nazi remnants, fascists" on Saturday after the Dutch government withdrew permission for his Foreign Minister to land there.

Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya had arrived in the country from Germany but was prevented from entering Turkey's diplomatic compound in Rotterdam, setting up an extraordinary stand-off with armed police.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately vowed to retaliate against the measure, saying the ban of the foreign minister was "reminiscent of Nazism".

During the Saturday interview, the Turkish foreign minister said German and Dutch bans on campaigns for a "Yes" vote in the upcoming referendum on constitutional changes means that Europe is "taking a side for a "No" vote". "I wonder if they know that I am mayor of a city that was bombed by the Nazis", he said in a response to Erdogan's claims.

The Dutch decision to ban Cavusoglu from visiting and holding a rally in the port city of Rotterdam came after Germany and other European nations also saw moves to block campaign events.

The Dutch ambassador Cornelis Van Rij is now on leave from returning to the country.

Denmark's prime minister has asked the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim to postponed a planned visit to the country due to "tensions" between Ankara and the Netherlands. Minister Fatima Betul Sayan Kaya tweeted: "Netherlands is violating all global laws, conventions and human rights".

Hundreds of pro-Turkey protesters scuffled with police as authorities tried to end a demonstration at the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam, where a Turkish minister fruitlessly tried to enter the compound. Turkey has tried drumming up support for its April 16 referendum through Turkish nationals outside the country.

Anti-Islam Mr Wilders used tonight's debate to yet again call for the Turkish ambassador to be evicted from the Netherlands as the country attempts to deal with a bitter row with Ankara after its foreign minister was denied entry over the weekend.

He later added "I am tell all Turks in the Netherlands that agree with Erdogan: GO to Turkey and NEVER come back!".

Turkey's European Union minister Omer Celik tweeted that the decision to block the foreign minister's visit "will go down in history as a dark spot on the Netherlands' democracy and diplomacy".

The Dutch government announced that Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's flight permit was revoked amid concerns over public order at the expected large gathering of Turkish expatriates.

Turkey's government has been campaigning hard on the "yes" vote, including sending a variety of ministers and officials to deliver speeches to Turkey's sizeable diaspora communities who are eligible to vote, including in Germany and the Netherlands.

Bayrakli said: "This shows how ridiculous the action of the Dutch government is".

Wilders later tweeted that Turkish people "have no business" in the Netherlands. Germany has also canceled two Turkish ministers' plans for rallies.
