Arsenal academy chief Andries Jonker poised to be named Wolfsburg manager

28 February 2017

After leaving the club after three years to replace Valerien Ismael at Wolfsburg, Jonker said: "I have had a wonderful three years at Arsenal". Die Wolfe, DFB Pokal winners in 2015, have picked up only 22 points from their first 22 league games, and face an unlikely battle against the drop. "Both aspects played a role in the fact that we were able to achieve a top solution". Ismael's predecessor, Dieter Hecking, was sacked seven games into the season. Before then he had been assistant manager at Wolfsburg, having previously been an assistant to Louis van Gaal with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the Dutch national team.

Appointed to the Wolfsburg helm on a permanent basis following a promising spell as interim coach last November, 41-year-old Ismael oversaw just five wins in 15 Bundesliga games after taking over from Dieter Hecking. "He is an internationally experienced coach and an expert tactician, who provides the best possible requirements to get VfL back on track quickly and sustainably".

Andries Jonker has been announced as the new manager of VFL Wolfsburg until the end of this current season.

In other news, insider Tim O'Toole purchased 6,509 shares of the stock in a transaction on Friday, February 24th. The stock's 50 day moving average price is GBX 144.90 and its 200 day moving average price is GBX 137.50.

Sources have claimed for some time that Jonker and Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger did not see eye to eye on a number of subjects - one of whom was club legend Thierry Henry.

Promoting from within their current academy set-up will be considered by Arsenal as they look for Jonker's replacement Morrow, who is current head of scouting for the club's academy, is highly-respected and could be an option if the club decide to make an internal appointment.
