First flu-related death in Sussex County confirmed

15 February 2017

A 74-year-old woman is the first person in Sussex County to die of flu-related symptoms during the current influenza season.

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is warning Bexar County residents of an increase of flu cases over the past few weeks.

Officials with the state say this year's vaccine is well-matched to the strains of flu circulating the country. Health department employees say they started seeing cases of the flu in early September. "So with this little break of warm weather that we're anticipating hopefully that'll help slow these numbers down", said Hall. Tennessee typically sees four to five deaths among children from flu-related complications each year. Most people who get the flu usually recover in one to two weeks, but the flu can be deadly. "For this influenza season, there appears to be a good match between the vaccine and the influenza strains infecting people".

Experts say fly season runs until May, so it is not too late to get a flu shot.

Flu season is never a fun time for parents and their children.

Marianne Kundich, nursing supervisor at the Lake County Health Department, said her department doesn't charge for the vaccine for adults without insurance and doesn't charge children on Medicaid, and they take insurance from some places.

Heavy Volume Consumer Stocks: PACCAR Inc (PCAR), Coca-Cola European Partners Plc (CCE)
Excluding items, the company earned 37 cents per share, in line with the average analysts' estimate, according to Thomson Reuters. Meeder Asset Management Inc. increased its stake in shares of Coca-Cola European Partners PLC by 19.0% in the third quarter.

This means there's no more nasal flu vaccine, which experts found practically ineffective.

The number of people hospitalized as a result of the flu varies from year to year.

"It would have been better to get vaccinated in October, and you may want to think about that next year, but you can still get vaccinated and see benefit from it", Brammer said.

Flu activity in SC is high and widespread right now. Called FluMist, this flu nasal form is made from a weakened flu virus form, unlike traditional shots using dead virus.

Gerson also recommended that if you or your kids have a fever, it is important to stay home from work or school.
