European Union leader: USA 'committed' to Iran nuclear deal

She also met on Thursday with Michael Flynn, Trump's national security advisor, a White House official said.

Iran was Mogherini's priority on this visit, she said, but she also came to draw some clear lines for the new administration.

This is a new era for US relations with the European Union.

"I was reassured by what I heard in my meetings on the intention to stick to the full and strict implementation of the agreement in all its part", Mogherini told France 24.

"We do not interfere in USA politics. and Europeans expect that America does not interfere in European politics", Mogherini told reporters at the end of her trip to Washington.

The two discussed "trans-Atlantic relations, the common challenge of countering terrorism, the ongoing work to strengthen European defense, relations with Russian Federation, the Iran nuclear deal and the main crises, from Ukraine to Syria", the statement said.

While the new United States leader has toned down some of his criticism of America's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies since his election, he has shown no enthusiasm for the 28-member European Union and has praised Britain's decision to leave the bloc. "I don't know if Americans will be united on that, but Europeans will", Mogherini said.

That changed last night, with Allegri telling Mediaset Premium , "I won't confirm or deny anything". Arsene Wenger's position as Arsenal manager is under severe scrutiny (again).

"The deal is working" and needs to remain intact, Mogherini said.

Mogherini made clear that a objective of her two-day visit so early in the president's tenure is to establish the principle that the federation will work with the United States whenever possible but will take its own course when it disagrees.

Trump has said the deal is awful, and Flynn put Iran "on notice" last week for test-firing a ballistic missile, raising the prospect of spiking tensions between Iran and the United States. The State Department provided no summary of his meeting with Mogherini afterward, as has been common practice for both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Berlin is using a "grossly undervalued" euro to "exploit" the US and its European Union partners, Mr. Navarro said, describing the euro as an "implicit deutsche mark" whose low valuation gives German exporters an advantage over their American rivals.

But she made clear that the European Union would not isolate Tehran.

Top parties in the European Parliament have said that the E.U. should declare him persona non grata if he is nominated to the post. For us, the sanctions are not a policy itself. "The European Union is here to stay".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most powerful leader, told other European leaders last week that the continent must stand on its own during Trump's tenure.
