Dempsey out for Timbers match, has irregular heartbeat

Now, having endured a long, injury-riddled 2016, the Timbers hope to start yet another season-capping run, preferably starting with Sunday's 4-2 win over the Seattle Sounders.

Melano scored off Diego Chara's cross in the 29th minute, before Steven Taylor's header off a free kick in the 43rd to give the Timbers a 4-0 lead going into the break.

This season, Dempsey has amassed eight goals in 17 games with Seattle, including a hat trick against Orlando City on August 7.

Portland scored four goals in the first half then held on to snap the Sounders' five-game unbeaten streak. They beat the Timbers, 3-1, last Sunday in Seattle, but sit in eighth place in the conference standings. Dempsey was the U.S.'s top goal-scorer, leading coach Jurgen Klinsmann to hint that the forward could stick around through the 2018 World Cup.

A US soccer spokesperson confirmed to ESPN FC that Dempsey will not take part in the two matches, scheduled for September 2 and September 6, respectively. Nagbe has eight previous appearances with the national team.

"Everybody here - us, U.S. Soccer, Clint - we're all on the same page", Lagerwey said at practice Friday.
